Andrew Yap – Medtasker

In this episode, my guest is Andrew Yap, founder of Medtasker,  a mobile communication and care coordination platform for hospitals, that improves patients’ safety and hospital efficiency.

Andrew is a medical doctor who became frustrated at the inefficiencies in the hospital communication process and workflow – reliant on pager, fax and phone, still today in the 21st Century.  So he decided to do something about it.

Show Notes

Key points and take-aways from this episode with Andrew Yap from Medtasker:

  • Andrew’s frustrations at the inefficiency of hospitals’ communication channels and workflow led him develop a communication tool, that not only streamlines the process and makes it more efficient, but also brings about a much better outcome for patients.
  • The current workflow in emergency wards looks like this – patient arrives in emergency; person on switchboard looks through a spreadsheet to determine who is on call; finds pager number; pages the duty doctor; waits for call back; may get call back, or may need to find next doctor to call – very innefficient!  (and scary for the patient!)
  • Medtasker is a mobile communication and care coordination platform for hospitals that improves patients’ safety and hospital efficiency. It provides hospital managers visibility into hospital operations, that is currently lost by pager, fax and phone. It also allows the clinicians to do their jobs more effectively and safely.[00:08:05]
  • Medtasker integrates with all the core hospital records and allows those systems to communicate directly with the treating clinician.  The core for Medtasker is knowing which doctor is looking after which patient. Communication can then be routed directly to the right person.[00:08:56]
  • Medtasker does point to point communication. In the future, it will be expanded to a full workflow solution.[00:12:15]
  • Medtasker is in trial at a number of hospitals in Victoria, Australia.  The adoption cycle is quite long, as the medical industry is conservative in adoption of this type of system to manage the workflow.
  • Andrew freely admits that he underestimated the challenge of starting a new business and getting his idea off the ground and implemented.  It was critical that he understood the industry as an insider and understood the target market.  Having the perseverance to move forward when something is harder to achieve, than first anticipated is also key. [00:23:30]
  • How Andrew manages and builds a culture that reflects the vision of the business and keeps the drive and passion alive, throughout the whole team, during a rapid growth phase – stop and think consciously with your team members what you all want to build and solidify the foundation with them. Of course, it is an ongoing process. [00:27:40]
  • Medtasker is easy to use, but it does require a change in the hospital workflow, which can be a challenge for implementation.  Andrew says that a good onboarding process and very effective training program is the way that the Medtasker team addresses this. [00:37:15]

The Buzz – Our Innovation Round

Here are Andrew’s answers to the questions of our Innovation round. Listen to the interview to get the full scoop.

  • #1 thing to be more innovative – Immerse yourself in the area in which you want to do something. Spend time in shadowing people and learn from others.
  • Best thing for new ideas – “Walk in the shoes of others” and then transfer what you’ve learned into your industry.
  • Favourite tool for innovation – In terms of improving productivity, have a list. In terms of favorite tool for innovation and things, it’s pretty much pen and paper and sketching, doing things quickly, modeling things and giving them to the right people who are able to transform that into a new product.
  • Keep project / client on track – Have a good project manager.
  • Differentiate – Find your passion, do it, live it and breath it. People will know you for it.
