In this episode, I’m really excited to have as my guest, Scott Mason, a lawyer turned entrepreneur, motivational keynote speaker, and business owner. Scott is a man on a mission to do three things for his business clients – grow, scale and sustain. As a keynote and motivational speaker, Scott focuses on resilience, personal transformation, and social ethics, as well as leadership and the entrepreneurial mindset. He also provides consulting services regarding operations, strategy, business development, and scaling, to small businesses, as well as leadership mentoring.

In our discussion, Scott talked to me about:

  • Connecting to your deeper purpose as the goal of your journey
  • Being compelled to service as the vehicle of that purpose
  • Why entrepreneurial and sales/marketing motivation is more than a personal or business issue: it is an existential, moral imperative.

  • We need to connect with our purpose to truly accomplish what we need to in this life. We need to spend the time and effort to understand what our purpose means to us both personally and professionally and make sure that we do the work afterward to build a better self and a better world.
  • Being of service is at the core of resilience and sustainability. It is at the core of what makes us viable both as people and as businesses.
  • There is a difference between something that you want to do and what your purpose is. What you think you want may not necessarily be what your purpose is.
  • A purpose is what represents your skills and experiences within which you are compelled to provide service.
  • A passion is merely something that you like. A purpose is something that drives you.
  • Passion is driven entirely by a different mindset and often comes from a place of ego.
  • It’s not about what you like the most. It’s about how you can contribute in a way that is meaningful and leverages your skills and experiences.
  • A purpose is something that you feel strongly about, where you are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to do that. If you’re not willing to sacrifice, then, it’s probably not your purpose but just something that you really care about.
  • Be willing to take the time and energy to leverage your skills and experiences to commit to your purpose. 
  • Commitment to purpose ultimately involves leaving your ego behind. You have to be willing to roll up your sleeves and do your egoless work.
  • What’s driving us always does matter.
  • Where there is a loss, where there is a challenge, and where others are struggling, there is an opportunity.
  • The world that comes after this pandemic is going to be very different than how it was before, but the technology that those of us have chosen to embrace is not going anywhere.
  • Two types of people will come out on top after this pandemic – the essential people, who have proven they are essential, and the visionaries who have chosen to embrace the future. Those of us that were able to figure out how to be resilient and viewed this as an opportunity are going to be the ones rebuilding the new world. 
  • The world is going to need us more than ever, and whatever comes next will be beyond what we can imagine.
  • Resilience is driven by your determination to fulfill your purpose. Once you understand your purpose and make that commitment to connect to it, resilience will almost come as second nature.
  • Tragedies present opportunities for change. Every horror around us is just part of another step forward for us and for other people to learn from.
  • For every bad day we are going to experience, that we make through, it is inevitable that we are going to learn if we do so. 
  • Letting go of your ego allows you to honestly look at your business. 
  • Entrepreneurs and business people serve a sacred function in a capitalist society. We are responsible for the allocation of resources and the flow of cash throughout the economy. If we are not doing the things that we need to do in order to make sure that we are fulfilling that macro goal, especially if we have been given the gift of skills and experiences to do so, we are betraying our obligation to the larger system that we operate in. 
  • The future isn’t going anywhere. Our vision for the future and our willingness to hop on to it are the things that will make a difference.

  1. #1 thing to be more innovative – Be mindful of the fact that if we are not innovative, we are at a profound professional and social risk. Understand and accept that whether we like it or not, innovation is the absolute key to long-term and sustainable survival as business people and as individuals.
  2. Best thing for new ideas – Networking and building real meaningful relationships with people. You can have the best ideas in the world, but if you’re not socially interacting with others, you are inevitably limiting the inputs that can accelerate creativity and innovation within your own thoughts. 
  3. Favourite tool for innovation – Linkedin
  4. Keep project/client on track – Project management – regularly meet with them in advance and go through the accountability portion of those plans. Build the relationship right at the beginning.
  5. Differentiate – Understand your purpose and why it’s unique to you, and how it ties to your specific skills and experiences. No one skill and experience are identical. When you tie it back to your purpose, not only will it drive you to the right clients but it will also put you into a position where you are able to explain the full extent of the service that you can provide, as well as its limitations.
