Kevin Kelly, Building Blocks of Wisdom – Innova.Buzz 574

Kevin Kelly, Wired Magazine

Our guest in this episode is Kevin Kelly. Kevin helped launch and edit Wired magazine, has written for the NY Times and Wall Street Journal and his latest book is “Excellent Advice for Living”. Kevin was also our guest on Episode 83 of the Innova.Buzz Podcast. He’s admired for his acute perspectives on technology and its relevance to history, biology and society.

When Kevin and I spoke, we talked about how life is a constantly shifting landscape that presents opportunities for growth and new experiences. It’s essential to break free from any sense of equilibrium or harmony that holds us back and embrace the unknown. We also discussed the potential of AI technology in solving problems and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, while being aware of the dangers of misuse. Finally, we discussed the importance of finding our own paths and unique genius, as each of us is the star of our own movie. Key takeaways were:

  • Embrace change and the unknown to find new opportunities for growth and personal fulfillment.
  • AI technology can help us solve problems, but it’s important to be mindful of its potential for misuse.
  • Each person should find their own path and embrace their unique talents and potential.

Show Notes from this episode with Kevin Kelly

Key points and takeaways from this episode include:

  • Optimism is something you can learn – in order to accomplish good things in the future, we need to be optimistic.
  • Studying history can provide perspective and decrease current anxieties, and exploring basic elements will foster a deeper understanding of the world.
  • Bad things happen fast and can be immediately reported, but paying attention to longer-term things can provide a more optimistic outlook.
  • Pronoia is the opposite of paranoia. Assume the best of people, and trust in the generosity of the universe.
  • Gratitude is important and brings a sense of trust, assuming the best of people motivated by a generosity of the universe that we can receive.
  • The more you give, the more you get – The Paradox of Giving – it is actually the most selfish thing you can do.
  • The book “Excellent Advice for Living Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier” contains practical advice for living and encouraging readers to strive to fully become themselves instead of just being the best.
  • Life is about becoming more improbable and making ourselves the most improbable character we can be.
  • Becoming the only you requires help from others, our uniqueness requires collective support for actualization.
  • Life is constantly changing, and equilibrium and harmony can lead to stagnation and absence of growth.
  • Generally we are ignorant of our own motivations and thoughts, and language is not enough to understand ourselves, but elaborate networks of people help us arrive at a better understanding of ourselves.
  • Recent AI technology, particularly generative AI, is accessible to everyone and embedded in various apps and companies for everyone’s benefit. AI increases our capacity for solving problems and create more than what we destroy. We’re entering into the most powerful technology to day, and it will be powerfully used and powerfully abused or misused.
  • Advice for 20 year olds: Work on something without a name that has no competition and room for breakthroughs. Do something crazy, stupid, memorable, and looks nothing like success at that time, just for the experience and as a touchstone for future success.
  • Be the star in your own movie rather than an extra in someone else’s movie.
  • Find a way to express your unique genius. Follow what you’re good at, what you can get paid to do, enjoy doing, and what others find difficult and you find easy. That thing that made you weird as a kid can make you great as an adult as long as you don’t lose it.
The more you give, the more you get. Giving is the most selfish thing you can do. #Generosity #SelfishGiving @kevin2kelly on #InnovaBuzz podcast Share on X
