Neil Sahota, Preparing for the A.I. Revolution – InnovaBuzz 343

Neil Sahota

Neil Sahota, Own the A.I. Revolution

In this episode, I’m really excited to have as my guest, Neil Sahota, an IBM Master Inventor, United Nations (UN) artificial intelligence (AI) Advisor, keynote speaker, author of the book Own the A.I. Revolution, and Professor at UC Irvine.

Over his 20+ year career, Neil has worked with enterprises on the business and marketing strategies to create next generation products/solutions powered by emerging technology as well as helping organizations create the culture, community, and ecosystem needed to achieve success such as the U.N.’s AI for Good initiative. Neil also actively pursues social good and volunteers with nonprofits. He is currently helping the Zero Abuse Project prevent child sexual abuse as well as Planet Home to engage youth culture in sustainability initiatives.

In our discussion, Neil and I talked about:

  • How the AI revolution is opening up new job opportunities
  • Applications that are already using AI for good and helping people
  • The “age of relationships” and human connection.

Jaime Jay in episode 335 introduced us to Neil.

Show Notes from this episode with Neil Sahota, IBM Master Inventor, UN A.I. Advisor, and author of Own the A.I Revolution

Key points and takeaways from this episode include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is a computer that can perform tasks without human supervision.
  • A.I. only does what we tell it to do and only when we tell it to do it.
  • Machines learn differently than humans.
  • A.I. is only as good as the data we give it – the ground truth that supports it.
  • A.I. has the ability to try to answer questions we don’t know the answer to. It is what sets it apart from automation.
  • Ground truths are guiding principles that drive how we make decisions.
  • The power of relationships is far more impactful and far more valuable.
  • Non-technologists tend to more successful with their A.I. startups because they are really focused on trying to solve a problem.
  • Neil’s book, “Own the A.I. Revolution”, aims to educate, empower, and enable people, business leaders in particular, about the power of A.I.
  • The 4th industrial revolution is the digitalization of all industries. It is going to change a lot of what we do and how we do it.
  • You can’t automate everything. You still need human connection.
  • Right now is an interesting time for people who are willing to disrupt. Things aren’t going back to what we used to know but there is an opportunity.
  • This is not the new normal. It is just the next normal and we have a chance to shape this next normal. We can shape the future of work. We can take control of our destiny and do something.
  • Some jobs are going to go away but new types of jobs are going to emerge out of these things.
  • Retrain, reskill, and repurpose!
  • We can shape this opportunity. Rather than waiting for it to happen and be the passenger, we can be the driver that leads the change. Take advantage of this opportunity and redefine what it’s going to be.
  • A.I is definitely not a substitute for human relations but it can actually make us more human. It gives us an opportunity to explore what used to be human and to connect with people on a deeper level. It gives us the opportunity to be in touch with our own humanity.

The Buzz – Our Innovation Round

Here are Neil’s answers to the questions of our innovation round. Listen to the conversation to get the full scoop.

  1. #1 thing to be more innovative – Take risks.
  2. Best thing for new ideas – Think differently. Look at different perspectives. See different view points, and connect them together.
  3. Favourite tool for innovation – TUCBO – Think Different, Understand Different, Create Different, Be Different, and Own Different.
  4. Keep project/client on track – Manage the people. Make sure that people understand why they’re doing what they’re doing, what the value is, and what’s in it for every stakeholder.
  5. Differentiate – Learn to stand out and blow your own trumpet. If you just sit there and do great work, hoping that people will recognise it, that is not going to happen. If you want to stand out and differentiate yourself, you have to be able to say why you’re different and what’s the value that you bring.

To Be a Leader

Some of the greatest companies started in the worst possible times. It’s all about your mindset. Be optimistic. Not only will you feel better about yourself but you will also be more productive and you are going to have a lot of those innovative opportunities, so stay optimistic.
