The headline can be the difference between success or failure in your business when writing online. You might have the most sought-after content, user-friendly technical settings and attractive way of writing – but these are not effective because of a lousy headline. As a result, the investment spent in terms of time and money, in writing that article, just disappeared quickly down the drain!
What should you do? Focus on the purpose of your article, but from the reader’s point of view. The reader is likely to be asking for themself, “Why am I here?” and “Am I in the right place to find what I need right now?” Check your headline – does it answer these questions, expressed as benefits to your audience? If it also answers the logical second question “What do you have for me?”, then you are well on your way to a successful headline.
Here are some examples:
- If you are writing about an SEO technique that can increase web traffic, then your headline could be “5 Sure Fire Tips to Get Substantial Cash Convertible Leads from your Website”.
- If you want to share your success in web development, you might headline your article: “3 Essential Web Development Considerations that can Increase your Client Base”.
- If you are selling cooking wares that do not require lengthy cleaning up procedures, you can say: “Prepare a Stylish Meal without the Mess!”
You probably noticed that these examples are very compelling. They are intended to entice readers to read more. This is the secret of writing effective headlines – readers know the direct benefit immediately, just by reading the title and feel compelled to read the content for the details. The purpose of the headline is not a “hard sell”, but to get the interest of your reader – those who “are in the right place” – with a solution to a problem or a direct benefit.
It’s best to avoid cheesy and highly commercialised titles (unless, of course, that is your style!).
Once you have a winning title, your great content will take care of the selling! Enjoy the results of all the hard work by watching your traffic rates and conversion rates going up. Enhance the engagement with your readers by encouraging sharing on the social media and also comments on your blog post article.
Increased engagement, will build trust and ultimately lead to sales.
